Spain’s medieval splendour on show

VALLADOLID – An exhibition marking the 500th anniversary of the death of Queen Isabella opened Friday.

Queen Isabella, with her husband, King Ferdinand, sponsored Christopher Columbus and ruled the country during its most important phase.

Spanish political developments of the 15th and 16th centuries, including incidents that contuine to influence the world to this day, highlight the show “Isabel la Catolica. La magnificencia de un reinado.”

Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar joined other officials on a tour of the Nuestra Señora del Prado monastery, which is housing the exhibition.

Among the show’s highlights is a portrait of Isabella painted by Juan de Flandes around 1500.

The splendour of the court and the era’s cultural richness are dominant themes of the display, which has 150 pieces, including historical documents and art works.
