Spanish air controllers returning to work: airport operator

Striking air traffic controllers began returning to work Saturday, re-opening skies over more than half of Spain although flights had yet to resume, airport operator AENA said.

"Controllers are returning to work at their control stations," said an AENA spokesman.

Half of the Spanish airspace had re-opened but flights had yet to resume because of required preparations such as advising pilots and passengers and European air safety authority Eurocontrol.

Of the 58 air sectors over Spain, 28 had already re-opened, the airport operator said, after the government declared a state of alert and warned strikers they could face criminal prosecution.
