MADRID - For the first time, the leader of the opposition Popular Party (PP), Mariano Rajoy, has scored higher in an opinion poll than Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, achieving a 43-percent approval rating. Zapatero, whose reputation is suffering due to the economic crisis, scored 42 percent.

According to the survey, carried out for the radio network Cadena Ser and made public Tuesday, neither leader can claim to enjoy the support of a majority, but Rajoy has improved his situation after being re-elected party leader at the PP convention last month.

The survey also showed that if a general election were called today, Zapatero's Socialist Party would win 42 percent of the vote, while the PP would get 41 percent.
