Madrid – Spanish police detained 20 people Sunday after overnight clashes with youths in an affluent Madrid suburb left 10 officers injured and a police car in flames, the interior ministry said Sunday.

The youths threw bottles and stones at agents, set fire to a police car and broke the windows of several others, as well as the glass of bus shelters in Pozuelo de Alarcon, which has one of Spain's highest incomes per capita.

Seven of those arrested were minors, the ministry said in a statement, while two of the officers were seriously injured.

The unrest began shortly after 2:00 am on Sunday when police received a call for help from a youth who had been hit in the head with a glass bottle near the town's annual festival, the ministry said.

While police were trying to treat the injured youth, others in the area began throwing rocks and bottles at the officers and their vehicles, prompting the authorities to call for reinforcements, it said.

"Faced with the police intervention the youths, far from dispersing, began destroying all the property that got in their way," the statement said.

"Shortly after 4:00 am a group of stragglers who were possibly under the effects of alcohol, tried to enter the local police station by climbing over the surrounding wall but were quickly brought under control," it added.

Several youths could be heard taunting and insulting police, or gathering around the flames of a burning garbage bin, in videos taken at the scene which were posted on YouTube.

Those detained face charges for public order and assaulting an officer.
