FRANKFURT – Cape Town is to hold its first international book fair next year thanks to help from Frankfurt Book Fair experts, the German book industry said on Tuesday.
The Publishers Association of South Africa (PASA) signed a joint- venture agreement with the Frankfurt organizers to hold a four-day Cape Town Book Fair (CTBF) annually from June 2006 with a festival of literature in city schools and libraries to accompany it.
Aimed at the general reading public, the exhibition will be held in the Cape Town International Convention Centre with both South African and foreign publishers setting up stands.
The Frankfurt Book Fair, a unit of the German publishers and booksellers federation, will provide technical, financial and marketing assistance. Its director, Volker Neumann, said the agreement had been under negotiation for two years.
South Africa’s Arts and Culture Ministry had promised to aid the project financially, he added.
The Frankfurt announcement noted that PASA chairman Lindelwe Mabandla and executive director Dudley Schroeder would appoint a fair director within the next month and were inviting tenders from public relations firms to promote the event.
The annual Frankfurt fair is the world’s biggest book show and the main marketplace worldwide for deals between publishers for translation and reprint rights.
