Croatian maritime police on Saturday rescued three Spaniards after their hot air balloon landed in the northern Adriatic, the sea and transport ministry said.

The three were found some 11.5 nautical miles northwest of the northern Brijuni islands, it was quoted as saying by the HINA news agency.

The balloonists left from the northwestern Italian town of Bolzano heading for Spain, but their Global Positioning System (GPS) device failed as winds started to push them towards Adriatic.

The Spaniards called for help from Croatia's national air traffic control which launched a search.
