MADRID - Metal rained on Spain in Beijing Sunday as Rafal Nadal won gold in the men's singles tennis, the duo formed by Virginia Ruano and Anabel Medina took silver in the women's doubles and Gervasio Deferr became the most garlanded Olympic gymnast in the nation's history.

For Nadal Olympic gold, after defeating Chile's Fernando González 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 in the final, marks the latest in a string of impressive triumphs this year that have made him world number one. "I've won this for a lot of people, not just me," the Majorcan tennis star said.

Ruano and Medina added to Spain's tennis prowess with a silver after they were defeated 6-2, 6-0 by the Williams sisters of the United States in the women's doubles on Sunday.

Another silver went to Deferr, who narrowly missed out on gold to China's Zou Kai in the floor competition. Having won gold at both the Sydney and Athens Olympics, his Beijing finish makes him Spain's leading Olympic medal holder for gymnastics.

Spain also picked up another medal Sunday, as 49er sailing team Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández come in second after the Danish crew.
