Jazz Maastricht is as concerned with jazz as it is with the city of Maastricht. A varied programme of activities aims to strengthen the creative and international climate in the Dutch city. The festival will be held from 9 March to 13 May 2017.

This year the festival in Maastricht features ‘Sun Ra Arkestra’.

Led by Marshal Allen (92), the legendary ‘Sun Ra Arkestra’ has now been orbiting planet earth for six decades, at the forefront of space-jazz exploration.

Dressed head to toe in afro-futuristic robes, the Arkestra is a traveling, ever changing, cosmic ensemble. Formed by Sun Ra (visionary pianist, composer, writer, mystic, artist and alleged inhabitant of Saturn), the band’s music is a kaleidoscopic mix of African rhythms, avant-garde jazz, classic swing, modern electronica and Egyptian cosmology. The result has been described as “a New Orleans funeral from outer space,” that has to be experienced to be believed.

Marshall Allen, who has been with the Arkestra since 1958, took over the lead role since Sun Ra’s departure from earth in 1993. In his travels through otherwordly musical dimensions he is guided by one simple principle: “play what you don’t know.” Being at this concert is the closest you’ll get to an out of body experience without using mind enhancing substances!

“A Sun Ra Arkestra show is about as far away from a conventional performance as the late leader of the band believed his spiritual home was from Earth. It’s watching something unique, brilliant and legendary” – The Guardian

Here’s a taste:
