The man with a history of mental illness, shot and injured a woman, took his mother hostage at gunpoint before he was killed in a shootout with police.

PARIS – A man opened fire on a busy Paris street on Monday, injuring a passerby, and took his mother hostage at gunpoint, before being killed in a shootout with police, officials said.

The 45-year-old man, who had a history of mental illness, bolted himself inside his 12th-floor apartment in the southeast of the capital, after shooting and injuring a woman outside a nearby Metro station.

Police cordoned off the area, in southeastern Paris's 13th district, shutting the local underground line, as heavily armed officers surrounded the building.

The man agreed to release his mother after several hours of negotiations, but then opened fire on the police, injuring an officer in the hand.

Following a subsequent exchange of gunfire, officers stormed the flat and found him dead, police officials said.

A post-mortem examination has been ordered to determine whether he was killed by police fire or committed suicide.

The injured woman was hospitalised but her life was not in danger, while a female resident of the building was evacuated in a state of shock.
