French lawmakers pass political ethics law by large majority

France's parliament overwhelmingly backed a new law Wednesday to clean up politics, a campaign promise of President Emmanuel Macron following a string of scandals.

A total of 412 lawmakers backed the bill, against 74 with 62 abstentions.

The law will notably scrap cash handouts for lawmakers to spend on areas and NGOs of their choice.

Parliament had last week already voted through aspects of the bill banning politicians from employing their family members.

The legislation comes after a series of scandals in which lawmakers allegedly paid family members for fake jobs -- including that which torpedoed the presidential bid of Macron's rightwing rival Francois Fillon, who paid his wife and children some 900,000 euros ($1 million) over 15 years.
