Tens of thousands protest French pension reform

Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in Paris on Tuesday to protest a looming government announcement on pension reform, police and organisers said.

Police said 23,000 people joined a march in eastern Paris, while the FO union which called the protest put the figure at 70,000.

The government was due on Wednesday to unveil its proposals to raise the retirement age from 60, possibly as high as 63, amid efforts to cut France's big budget deficit.

An alliance of other unions has called its own strike on June 24 and did not join in Tuesday's action.

An FO strike in the southern city of Marseille caused three road tunnels to be closed due to a lack of security staff, leading to traffic jams which were worsened by heavy rain, according to traffic information authority CRICR.
