Supporters of French Top 14 champions Clermont caused a mini earthquake while watching Sunday's final victory over Toulon, the local Observatory said on Wednesday.

"The movement of 40,000 supporters gathered on Jaude square (in the centre of the town of Clermont-Ferrand) caused vibrations which generated seismic waves in the ground," Jean Battaglia, science chief for seismic activity in the Auvergne region, told AFP.

Two readers situated at 2.5km and 6km from the centre of the town -- where the supporters were watching images from the Paris match on a giant screen -- recorded peaks in seismic activity throughout the match, which Clermont won 22-16.

"The ground was trembling in a way, without people realising it," added Battaglia.

Noticeable peaks were recorded when Fijian wing Alivereti Raka scored Clermont's try and when captain Damien Chouly lifted the winner's trophy after the game.
