We provide an overview of hospitals in the Netherlands including where to find them in the major cities across the country.
There are lots of excellent hospitals (ziekenhuis) that offer high standards of care, all throughout the Netherlands. In general, they fall into one of three categories: university medical centers, teaching hospitals, and general hospitals. Those attached to universities that carry out medical research provide the most advanced medical equipment and treatment. These also tend to offer more specialized care. If you require specialist treatment in the Netherlands, therefore, you will likely receive it at one of these.
Unless it is an emergency, you will need a referral letter from your GP to go to a hospital in the Netherlands. If you are admitted as an in-patient, you may find yourself in a shared room or ward of up to six beds (mixed gender). However, if you prefer to have access to private rooms, however, you may consider taking out private health insurance in the Netherlands.
COVID-19 in the Netherlands

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for everyone. Many expats find themselves separated from family and loved ones in their home countries. As a foreigner, it is also sometimes difficult to find critical information regarding coronavirus infection rates, local measures and restrictions, and now, thankfully, vaccinations.
- For general coronavirus health information in the Netherlands, including vaccination schedules and locations, visit the RIVM website.
- For official COVID-19 measures, rules, and restrictions in the Netherlands, visit the Dutch government’s Coronavirus website.
