Robber who escaped Belgian jail arrested in Guinea

A Belgian armed robber who escaped a Brussels jail has been arrested in Conakry, capital of the west African country of Guinea, police said Friday.

Ibrahim Akhlal, 27, escaped from St Gilles prison in the Belgian capital in 2020, where he was serving a total of 21 years for a series of hold-ups.

He is also now wanted by Dutch authorities after being accused of taking part in a spectacular 14-million-euro gold heist in Amsterdam in May 2021.

According to a Belgian police statement, he was arrested by Guinea police on the night of December 16 as he headed into a nightclub.

Belgian ministries and the ambassador in Conakry are working with Guinea “in order to proceed as soon as possible with the extradition of the former fugitive,” the statement said.
