If you’re living or traveling in Switzerland, you’ll find the Swiss mountains are not just for skiing and other winter sports but also provide a wealth of summer activities for the whole family. Just so, the mountain resort of Verbier is not only known as a winter sports paradise; during the summer months, there is a host of things to do in the area to enjoy the alpine views and fresh air.
The Verbier Bike Park is definitely worth a visit for mountain biking addicts and amateurs alike. With 12km of downhill tracks, the park includes 8 slopes of different difficulties located between Fontanet (2,475m) and Verbier (1,535m) and a brand new track on the Tzoumaz side.
The bike park is open for the summer season during weekends in June, every day in July, August, and September and during weekends in October.
For those who don’t feel quite as strong as the cycling professional Alberto Contador, most shops also rent out electrical bikes. Without too much effort you can enjoy the climbing roads and ride up into the mountains without breaking a sweat!
Summer lifts – top station 3,330m
In July and August, the lifts in Verbier are open every day. Ideal for hikers and bikers, the well-developed lifts are great for accessing the mountain trails and 4 Vallees.
The lifts take you all the way to the top Mont Fort station at 3,330m. Here, sporty and non-sporty types alike will enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views over the Alps, with views to the Mont Blanc, Matterhorn and Grand Combin.
Verbier offers the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of the mountain while enjoying the fresh mountain air. There are hikes for all fitness levels, from an easy stroll along the Bisse de Levron to the five-hour-long Sentier de Chamois. A free map is normally available at the Medran lift station, which marks all the trails in Verbier.
Verbier has three golf courses: a professional 18-hole course, an 18-hole pitch-and-putt course, and an 18-hole mini-golf course. The professional course is only open to experienced players but the other two courses are open to anyone. All open on 19 May 2019.
Like most mountain resorts, paragliding is a very popular sport in Verbier. There are several professional companies that offer tandem flights for tourists. Nothing quite beats the rush of gliding through the air surrounded by glorious alpine scenery.
Although Verbier is a mountain village, summer seasonnaires and holidaymakers gather on hot days at the outdoor swimming pool – aka Verbier beach – at the Sports Center. The pool is surrounded by a large garden, two beach volleyball pitches, table tennis and a café serving drinks, ice-cream, and snacks. At Place Blanche, next to W hotel, there is also a small summer beach, where you can sunbathe or enjoy a cold beer.
Verbier is famous for its classical music festival, held each summer in late July and early August. The event is one of the world’s leading training ensembles and gives its members the opportunity to learn and to develop in a professional environment.
The International Horse Jumping event is an annual event held in August. The world’s best showjumpers from Switzerland and the rest of Europe come to Verbier to compete in this professional competition.
The challenging Grand Raid mountain bike race is an annual event from Verbier to Grimentz. The course is 121km with more than 5,000m of climbing. There are special deals on offer that include accommodation, food, and a lift pass.
