A Red Arrow plane from Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) crashed on Saturday during an acrobatic air display over Bournemouth on the southern English coast, the BBC reported.

A BBC producer at the scene said only eight of the nine Red Arrows taking part in the display at the Bournemouth Air Festival had landed.

Fire crews have been called to a crash near at Bournemouth International Airport, the broadcaster said.

"We are aware of an incident and we're investigating," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence.

An airport spokeswoman did not immediately have any details.

All nine Red Arrows pilots are members of the RAF, taking three years out of their military duties to perform daring acrobatic manoeuvres and flypasts across Britain each summer in brightly-painted Hawk jet trainers.
