A Russian Soyuz space capsule bringing three astronauts back from the International Space Station (ISS) Wednesday landed safely back on Earth in the Kazakh steppe, mission control said.

"The landing took place in the set region," mission control in Moscow said in a statement on Russian news agencies.

The Soyuz craft brought back Russian cosmonauts Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka and US astronaut Scott Kelly after five month stint on International Space Station.

Kelly is the brother-in-law of US lawmaker Gabrielle Giffords who was badly wounded when a mentally unstable gunman shot her in the head earlier this year while he was in space.
