Types of accommodation

To rent: Te huur

For sale: Te koop.

Auction: Veiling.

Room (to rent): Kamer (te huur).

Only show rooms where you can register with the municipality/government: Alleen kamers waar inschrijven bij gemeente mogelijk is.

Subletting: Onderhuur (this may not be allowed by the housing corporation, so check this with the advertiser of the accommodation in question).

Also temporary rooms: Ook tijdelijke kamers.

Live-in landlord: Hospita (you will have your own room, but will share the house with the landlord).

Shared: Gedeeld.

Temporary: Tijdelijk.

Non-temporary/permanent: Onbepaalde tijd.

Apartment: Appartement.

House/apartment to be bought: Koopwoning.

House/apartment to be rented: Huurwoning.

Newbuild: Nieuwbouw.

Semi-detached house: Twee-onder-een-kapwoning

Detached/stand-alone house: Vrijstaand huis

Terraced house: Rijtjeshuis

Listed building: Monumentaal pand.

Accommodation condition

Maintenance state/condition: Onderhoudsstaat.

Renovated: Gerenoveerd.

When it was built: Bouwperiode.

Living space (in sqm): Woonoppervlakte.

Acreage of house (plus garden): Perceeloppervlakte.

Area (bedroom): Oppervlakte (for example, in shared accommodation or room rental).

Own/private: Eigen.

Suitable for: Geschikt voor.

Date new owners/renters can move in: Oplevering.

Smoking OK: Roken toegestaan.

Pets allowed: Huisdieren OK.

Furnished: Gemeubileerd.

Unfurnished: Ongemeubileerd.

Unfurnished but includes flooring, curtains, ceiling lights, kitchen appliances: Gestoffeerd.

Orientation/location: Ligging (facing south, north etc.)

Accessibility: Toegankelijkheid (for people in wheelchairs etc.).

Energy label: Energielabel (how energy efficient is the house/apartment)

Accommodation features

Internet connection available: Internet aanwezig.

White goods (or kitchen appliances): Witgoed (of keukenapparatuur).

Oven: Oven

Fridge: Koelkast

Washing machine: Wasmachine

Kitchen: Keuken.

Bedroom: Slaapkamer.

Lounge room/salon: Woonkamer.

Bathroom: Badkamer.

Toilet: WC.

Douche: Shower.

Central heating: C.V.-ketel (also takes care of heated water in bathrooms).

Fireplace: Open haard.

Garden: Tuin.

Balcony: Balkon.

Terrace: area to sit in the garden – terras (if it is on a roof – dakterras).

Garage: garage

Shed: Schuur/berging.

Lift: elevator

Housing questions/terms

Amount of roommates: Aantal huisgenoten.

Flatmates: Huisgenoten (gender, man/woman: geslacht).

Working/employed: Werkend.

Unemployed (not a student though): Werkzoekend.

Minimum/net surface: Min. oppervlakte.

Maximum rent: Max. huurprijs

How much is the rent?: Hoeveel bedraagt de huur?

How long is the lease?: Hoe lang is de huurtermijn?

Rental period: Huurperiode.

Contract: contract.

Security Deposit: Borg (usually equal to one month’s rent. This will be returned to you if you leave the room in good condition).

Break clause: Ontbindingsclausule

Extra costs: Kosten koper, or k.k. (mentioned behind purchase price, e.g. EUR 400.000 k.k., meaning all costs involved in buying the house/apartment, such as taxes and notary costs, are not included in the price and to be paid by the buyer).

Costs included: Vrij op naam (opposite of kosten koper. This means the buyer does not need to pay these extra costs).

Capital transfer tax: Overdrachtsbelasting.

Open house: Open Huis (day where you can see the house/apartment without a prior appointment).
