Norwegian police have handed over to Russia a Russian neo-Nazi who saw his asylum application in Norway denied, the Norwegian police's immigration service said Saturday.

Viacheslav Datsik -- who had escaped from a psychiatric institute in Russia and carried a loaded gun when he went to Norwegian authorities to seek asylum in September -- "was handed over to the Russian government at about 8:30 pm (1930 GMT)" on Friday, spokeswoman Monica Thorud told AFP.

She said a plane carrying Datsik was first forced to land in Helsinki because "there were some problems with the landing permission in Russia," but explained he was then transported to the Finnish-Russian border by car.

"He was expelled from Norway forever," she said.

A Norwegian court cleared the way in February for him to be sent back.

Datsik was a former mixed martial arts champion specialising in kickboxing who was nicknamed "The Red Tarzan."

He was carrying a loaded gun when he reported to Norwegian police on September 21 to ask for asylum and was promptly detained for illegal possession of weapons.

Before fleeing to Norway, he was locked up in a Russian psychiatric institute after robbing a number of mobile phone shops, according to newspaper reports.

He was photographed in Oslo wearing a black T-shirt with a swastika, and performed a Hitler salute in a Norwegian courtroom despite wearing handcuffs.
