Last update on June 09, 2021

Deventer’s Bergkwartier seems to go back in time to the 19th century just before Christmas every year for the annual Dickens Festival. In December, you might just run into Oliver Twist, Scrooge, Marley or Mr. Pickwick.

Oliver Twist, Scrooge, Marley and Mr. Pickwick, they are all there. Vagabonds are begging, thieves are stealing. You smell the punch, puffed potatoes and roasted chestnuts. Wealthy ladies and gentlemen with top hats parade in the streets. Christmas Carol singers go from door to door. The scenery of the Dickens festival consists of historical buildings and houses, Christmas trees and thousands of little lights.

The fairytale world that Dickens described was very much the world of his childhood. The Dickens festival is the opportunity to meet a large number of protagonists and characters from the books of Dickens. The author’s era, the Victorian Times, was a time of great social contrasts, of wealth but also of great poverty. There were orphans running around, newspaper boys and girls a plenty, chestnut sellers, chimney sweeps, freaks, drifters and drunks.
