Easter festivities in Luxembourg

Easter is a fun time to be in Luxembourg and it is a holiday that the people of the Grand Duchy seem to celebrate more than most other cultures in Europe. Parents make and hide eggs for the kids, women offer their sweethearts chocolate Easter eggs and fairs are held in Luxembourg City on Easter Monday.

Easter Egg Hunt
The annual Easter Egg Hunt will be on 23 April at the Luxemburg Community Center and Park. Activities will include pictures with the Easter Bunny, games and face painting, refreshments, prizes and candy for children. Events will be held outdoors; dress accordingly and bring an Easter basket.

Eimaischen
Easter Monday sees the festival of Eimaischen in the town of Nospelt in Luxembourg. A traditional festival and flea market, its unique feature is the exchange of lovers’ tokens: little pottery birds that double as whistles, known as peckvillchen.

Nospelt started life as a potter’s village and the town grew up around it. As the potters made their plates and crockery, small amounts of clay would be left over at the end of the day, from which they fashioned the little earthenware whistles used at Eimaischen. Children in particular flock to Nospelt’s fair. As well as craft stalls, Eimaischen provides an excuse for a great deal of merrymaking, with partying in the streets and folk-dancing shows.
