Heir to Luxembourg throne to wed Belgian countess

Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, is to marry Belgian countess Stephanie de Lannoy later this year, the court said Thursday.

The 31-year-old son of Grand Duke Henri and the 28-year-old countess, born into one of Belgium’s oldest noble families, are to become engaged Friday in what is “an important event in the life of the country,” Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker told parliament.

The date of the wedding, expected in the second half of 2012, will be announced during the engagement, the premier said.

De Lannoy studied German and worked at the Belgian embassy in Berlin, and also speaks English and Russian.

Guillaume was at Sandhurst in Britain before going on to study political science in Britain and France. He will be the seventh member of the house of Nassau-Weilburg to ascend the grand ducal throne.
