TENERIFE – Spanish police arrested Wednesday a member of the IRA who is wanted for the murder of a soldier in a bomb attack eight years ago.
Michael Gerard Rogan, 44, from Belfast, was arrested in the resort town of Playa de las Americas in Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands.
Rogan was wanted in connection with a IRA bomb attack on an army barracks in October 1996.
He was alleged to have been part of the IRA team which set off two bombs at Thiepval Barracks.
The medical centre and parking area where blown up in the attacks in which British soldier James Bradwell was killed and a number of people were injured.
An international arrest warrant was issued for Rogan’s arrest for the bombing and his membership of the IRA, a banned organisation in the UK.
In a joint operation between Spanish police and the British Anti-Terrorist Branch, Rogan was arrested Wednesday morning at the resort.
Rogan will be extradited to the UK to face trial.
