Victims’ group head in court over PM ETA ‘slur’

30 November 2007

Madrid – The head of Spain’s largest association for victims of terrorism, Francisco José Alcaraz, on Thursday admitted before the High Court to calling Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero “ETA’s ambassador,” but claimed his words had been taken out of context.

Alcaraz, head of the Association of Victims of Terrorism (AVT) who a lawyers’ association accuses of insulting Zapatero, said he had claimed the government had given in to ETA during a failed peace process last year, but argued he had not intended to insult anyone.

The suit against Alcaraz was brought by a European lawyers’ association.
