Spain and France in talks on new gas pipeline

Madrid – Spain and France are in talks about building a new gas pipeline between the two countries, the chairman of Spain’s gas network operator Enagas said in an interview published Sunday.

"We are currently in talks about the possibility of a second big gas pipeline which would run along the Mediterranean coast," Antonio Llarden Carratala told Spanish newspaper ABC.

Between 7 and 7.5 billion cubic metres of gas a year could travel between Spain and France along the new route, he said.

If agreement was reached, work on the pipeline could be finished by 2015, the chairman said.

Llarden Carratala added the two countries currently had an agreement to double the capacity of an existing gas pipeline to five billion cubic metres a year.
