Power cut is timed perfectly

SEVILLE – A power cut in Andalucia left more than a million people without power for hours.

But, fortunately, the power cut struck in the middle of the night, when most people slept through the problem, oblivious to the inconvenience.

A fire at an electricty generating plant in Guillena, in Seville, cut power to Huelva, Seville and parts of Badajoz.

A spokesman for the energy giant Endesa said the power cut started at 2.10am on Monday morning.

Most of the affected areas had their power restored by 3.45am.

But the Endesa spokesman did admit that in some parts of the affected areas, in southern Spain, there were still problems with power-supply.

A spokesman for Red Electica, which controls the electricity grid, said the power-cut was caused by a fire at an electricity transformer, which stopped power to high-tension lines and faults at sub-stations. 

The power-cut affected more than a million consumers, though the need for electricity in the middle of the night was at a minimum.

Police in Huelva said the power-cut did not cause any incidents.

Last week, Madrid was plunged into darkness when a major power cut in the early evening caused metro trains to stop and street and traffic lights to go out.
