More low-cost flights to Spain

BELFAST – A low-cost airline has brought forward the start date for its new flights to France and Spain because demand in Northern Ireland is so high, it was reported Tuesday.

EasyJet introduces its direct flights from Belfast to Paris, Nice and Malaga on Tuesday, the BBC reported.

Flights from Belfast to Alicante will begin on Wednesday.

“By bringing these services forward 10 days, there will be an additional 12,000 seats available from Belfast to Alicante, Malaga, Nice and Paris,” a spokesman for the company said.

The new Paris route will be from Belfast International Airport to the city’s main airport, Charles de Gaulle.

The route will operate on a daily basis, but with a view to two flights.

Flights to Nice will be five times a week during the summer and four times a week in winter.

The services to Malaga and Alicante in Spain will be mainly concerned with outbound tourism.  

When plans for the new flights were officially announced in March, EasyJet chief executive Ray Webster said he was delighted that the government had shown such pro-active support for the airline industry.

“Consumers in Northern Ireland now have more opportunities to travel throughout Europe at Easyjet’s fantastic low fares, and there will be great benefits to the local economy as increasing numbers of Europeans travel to Belfast as a destination,” he said.

Speaking at the time of the announcement, Northern Ireland Enterprise Minister Ian Pearson said the new French services had been made possible as a result of the air route development scheme which he initiated last September.

He said the new services would connect Northern Ireland to the two largest conurbations in France and would mean more demand in the local market, especially in the hospitality sector.
