Luxury car gang arrested

18 February 2004

ALICANTE – Police arrested Wednesday a gang of thieves who targetted only luxury cars and then exported them abroad.

The Guardia Civil arrested 24 members of the same gang, who stole the cars then sent them to Lithuania with false number plates.

The gang, who only stole BMW, Mercedes and Audis, have been linked to the murders of three people in Lithuania.

They were said to be members of the Lithuanian mafia and officers seized more than EUR 1 million.

Police said 23 of those arrested were from Lithuania and the other was from Russia.

The gang used trips to Lithuania with the stolen cars to bring drugs back and forth to Spain.

The arrests were made in Torrevieja and  Guardamar del Segura, near Alicante.

The arrests will be seen as further proof of the presence of East European gangs in the south of Spain.
