Gored Spanish bullfighter in grave condition: doctors

Acclaimed Spanish bullfighter Jose Tomas was in grave condition Sunday after being gored during a bullfight in the Mexican city of Aguascalientes.

Doctors late Saturday spent three hours trying to repair a femoral artery perforated during the bullfight.

Geronimo Aguayo, 34, director of the Miguel Hidalgo hospital, said during a press conference here that Tomas has shown “slight improvement” but remains in grave condition.

Saturday’s corrida was part of the festival of San Marcos, one of the most important festival days in the Mexican calendar.

Tomas was gored during the bullfight by a 470-kilo (1,000-pound) bull named ‘Navegante,’ his second bull of the evening.

The bull thrust its horn into the muscle of Tomas’s left thigh, puncturing the artery and causing the bullfighter to lose about half of the blood in his body, medical officials here said.
