Gale force winds stop fishing fleets sailing

17 December 2003

GIBRALTAR – Heavy winds stopped fishing boats and other small craft sailing through the Straits of Gibraltar Wednesday.

Gale force seven easterly winds blowing through the narrow waterway stopped all craft from setting sail, authorities said.

The hazardous conditions meant up to 150 boats from Gibraltar, 80 from Tarifa, 20 from Cádiz and 65 from La Línea de la Concepción, were unable to set out.

But according to weather forecasts, the gale should die out in the next few days.
