7 October 2005

MALAGA — Spanish police have arrested four members of a Portuguese gang in the latest operation against laundering drugs money on the Costa del Sol.

The gang invested EUR 40m in 132 flats in the Mijas area, near Malaga.

Detectives involved in the operation –codenamed Turron – raided seven properties in Mijas and blocked bank accounts containing millions of euros.

A number of offices, including those belonging to a law firm, have also been raided.

Two luxury Mercedes were seized along with EUR 12,000 in cash and a large amount of documentation.

A police source said it was thought the gang had used EUR 40m to buy 132 apartments in the Mijas area, which is also popular with British expats.

The judge who is leading the operation may seek the extradition to Spain of one member of the gang who is presently in jail in Brazil.
