Chance web search sees 13 arrested for child porn

28 November 2007

Madrid – Police have arrested 13 people across Spain accused of distributing child pornography over the internet, authorities said Tuesday.

The suspects, who live in 10 Spanish provinces, started being investigated in March after a woman looking for information on babies on an internet file-sharing network chanced upon two files containing images of adults abusing young children. Police traced the files to the people who had distributed them and uncovered thousands more photos and videos on the hard disks of their computers, as well as on DVDs and CDs.

The disclosure of the arrests comes two weeks after police concluded a separate operation in which 40 people who had been distributing child pornography over the internet and through cellphone messages were rounded up in 12 Spanish regions.
