Beckhams lose courtroom fight over ‘split’ story

25 April 2005

MADRID-David and Victoria Beckham have threatened legal action after losing a legal attempt to stop a British newspaper printing fresh allegations on how their marriage ‘reached breaking point’.

New revelations about the couple from their former nanny were published across seven pages in the late edition of the paper, claiming the Real Madrid and England star wanted ‘to split’ and Victoria Beckham was in tears over rumours of his affairs with other women.

The couple sought an injunction against the News of the World in the British High Court on Saturday night claiming the nanny, Abbie Gibson, 27, was in breach of a confidentiality contract.

In a statement, the News of the World said that the judge ruled in its favour on the grounds that the story was in the public interest. The decision was taken after a 90-minute hearing.

The couple’s lawyers had argued that the nanny’s contract had included a promise not to speak about the couple’s private lives.

The story has been widely picked-up by the Spanish media.

News of the World journalist Phil Taylor, one of the reporters who covered the story for the paper, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “The industry recognises that when the News of the World does print a story we go to incredible lengths to prove that every single fact we publish is correct.”

He said the newspaper did not ask the Beckhams for comment on the allegations.

“We did not ask the Beckhams for comment on their relationship. The reason is that we knew from past experience that they would apply for an injunction to try to cover up the truth.

“But what I would say now, and I say this as an open invitation, the News of the World would be very happy to sit down to talk to David and Victoria and hear what they’ve got to say. As always what we want to know is the truth.”

A spokesman for the Beckhams said they intended to take legal action over the story.

“We are consulting our lawyers with a view to taking legal action,” the spokesman said.

The News of the World story gave further details concerning beautician Danielle Heath, who has previously claimed to have had an affair with Beckham.

It also alleged that Ms Gibson had witnessed a series of rows between the celebrity couple.

The nanny claimed that Victoria Beckham had told her the England captain wanted to split up.

Asked why allegations about the Beckhams’ marriage were in the public interest the News of the World told BBC Radio Five Live: “The Beckhams, Britain’s most famous celebrity couple, have made millions portraying their relationship as a perfect marriage. “
