MADRID – David Beckham has been told his Real Madrid career is in jeopardy because of his showbiz lifestyle, it was reported Friday.
Enrique Sobrino, who is bidding for control of the Spanish club, said: “He’s causing problems. If I become president I would listen to offers for David Beckham. The scandal has been very damaging to the club.”
Spanish sports newspaper Marca reported that Sobrino, 35, a millionaire property and textile tycoon, has made the ditching of Real’s EUR 35 million (GBP25m) signing last summer the focal point of his election campaign.
He revealed his anger and frustration at finding Beckham constantly in the headlines over his personal life.
And Sobrino insisted: “We want our players to be stars for footballing reasons only.
“All this stuff about Beckham has caused a bad atmosphere at Real Madrid.”
Beckham’s performance in the bitter ‘derby’ match with rivals Barcelona on Sunday will be keenly watched.
