Armed robber dressed as Santa raids jeweller

16 December 2003

MALAGA – An armed robber dressed as Santa Claus shot a passer-by during a raid on a jewellery store in Malaga, police said Tuesday.

Dressed in a red cap, wearing a white beard, but armed with a 9mm pistol, the robber fired five shots, hitting a passer-by in the knee.

The festive robber was arrested shortly after by neighbours near the scene of the raid on the Zafir jewellers in the La Paz district of Malaga.

They overpowered the robber and called an ambulance to take the injured to hospital.

He was not said to be seriously injured despite being shot at five times. Police said the man was just grazed by the bullets.

The robber, who was slightly bruised when he was over-powered by neighbours and police, was examined by doctors later at hospital.

Police said he was later discharged from hospital and taken into custody. He will be tried in courts in Estepona, Marbella and Fuengirola for other armed robberies on jewellery stores and companies in which he had been disguised in a woman’s wig.

He did not get away with any cash during the latest raid.
