Spanish government threatens jail over air strike

Spain's government will hold a crisis meeting Saturday and may declare a state of alert, leading to possible criminal action against striking air traffic controllers, the interior minister said.

The extraordinary cabinet meeting on Saturday morning would declare a state of alert if the strikers had not returned to work, Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told reporters early Saturday.

"If a controller does not show up to his work place he will be placed immediately in custody accused of a crime which could mean serious prison sentences," he said.
