Man drowns trying to save dog from canal

MADRID - A man drowned in El Pont de Suerte, Lleida, yesterday while trying to rescue his dog from a canal. The man, whose identity has not yet been released by the authorities, jumped into the water after the pet, but was swept away by the strong current.

His body was later recovered at the El Pont de Suerte dam. A helicopter, the fire service, two units of the Catalan police service and a mountain unit were all deployed in an unsuccessful rescue attempt.
