Bulgarian football legend and ex-Barcelona striker Hristo Stoichkov was named an honorary consul to Spain on Friday, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The 45-year-old icon will be based in Barcelona, where he lives, and be responsible for the regions of Catalunya and Aragon.

Stoichkov debuted in professional football in 1985 with CSKA Sofia, where he won the European Golden Boot.

In 1990 he signed with Spanish giants Barcelona, winning the Spanish league four consecutive times and helping Barca to win the UEFA Champions' League in 1992.

At the 1994 World Cup in the United States, Stoichkov led his country to the semi-finals and was awarded the Golden boot as the tournament's joint top goal scorer.

He took up coaching in 2003, working with Barca first before coaching the Bulgarian national football team between 2004 and 2007.
