MADRID – Spanish prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero asked voters Monday to support his party in European elections to “consolidate the Socialist Project for Spain”.
Zapatero added his weight to the election campaign for the PSOE.
The European election on 13 June is expected to be the first real test of his government after his shock victory on 14 March.
He said the European elections had a “triple importance” for Europe, for Spain and for the Socialist Project.
Zapatero added that his government had already started two central thrusts of its election campaign programme: the withdrawal of Spanish troops from Iraq and the return of Spain to the centre of European power.
Zapatero also expressed his confidence that the future European Constitution will recognise the official languages of Spain.
These include not just Spanish, but Catalan, Basque and Galician.
Zapatero said that he wanted a Europe which is “strong, united and for the most part progressive”.
He promised to take part in the same electoral campaign with “the same energy and hope” that he used for the general election.
