Women only are invited for dinner at Moncloa

10 May 2006

MADRID — A women-only dinner in honour of the Chilean president is to be held by the pro-feminist Socialist government.

Deputy prime minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega is to host the dinner for Chilean president Michelle Bachelet, who is on a state visit to Spain.

President Bachelet, who is Chile’s first female head of state, will be joined by 200 other women chosen for their roles in politics, business, the arts or Spanish cultural life for the dinner at the presidential residence, La Moncloa.

The Socialist government has been anxious to court women voters.

The cabinet is made up of eight men and eight women, one of the first measures it brought in was a new law on domestic violence and another law will attempt to provide more equality in the workplace.

King Juan Carlos held a reception on Tuesday night in honour of Señora Bachelet, with Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is set to sign a strategic alliance accord with the Chilean premier on Wednesday.

Bachelet, making her first visit to Europe since taking office in March, will spend two days in Spain before travelling on to Vienna for an EU-Latin American and Caribbean summit.
