MADRID — Health authorities warned on Monday a batch of artichokes could be contaminated with the bacteria which causes botulism.
The artichokes, produced by the company Viuda de Mateo, were from the batch marked ND2430512 and have an ‘eat-by’ date of 21 December 2011.
The alarm was raised by health authorities in the Basque Country after two people who ate artichokes suffered botulism.
Botulism leads to nausea, diarrhoea, headaches and fever. It can contaminate conserves like jam and vegetables.
In older people it can be serious because of the resulting dehydration it causes.
The batch is being withdrawn from shops.
But health authorities warned anyone who has any of the symptoms of botulism, to go to their doctors.
