Valencia celebrate Uefa triumph
20 May 2004
VALENCIA – The city of Valencia was celebrating Thursday after its team claimed the Uefa Cup with a 2-0 win over Olympique Marseilles.
Former Manchester United keeper Fabien Barthez was dismissed for fouling Valencia striker Mista on the stroke of half-time, Vicente scoring from the resulting penalty.
And Mista wrapped up Valencia’s victory by rounding off a sweeping attack with a delightful finish past Barthez’s replacement Jeremy Gavanon.
Marseille made little impact after the dismissal, barely threatening Valencia.
Valencia deserved their victory, dominating what proved to be a very low-key encounter in Gothenburg.
The cup victory was a double-triumph for Valencia who recently won the Spanish championship, leaving biggest rivals Real Madrid with nothing.
