Two saved as houses collapse

4 May 2004

LLERIDA – Two women were saved when two separate buildings collapsed Tuesday.

Firefighters freed a woman who was buried in rubble after a three-storey building suddenly collapsed in Preixana, near Llerida, in Catalonia, north-east Spain.

The accident in Llerida happened at about 9.45am.

An investigation has been launched to discover why the three-storey block of flats suddenly fell down.

Nine firefighters managed to free the woman who was caught up in the rubble.

It is believed that heavy rain could have caused the accident in what was an old building.

In a separate accident, a married couple escaped with minor injuries when their house in Gandia, near Valencia, north-east Spain, collapsed.

The wife was initially trapped in the rubble but later freed. Her husband was able to climb out of the wreckage.

They suffered only cuts and shock when their house fell down.

At first it was thought that their son had been fatally injured but it soon became clear that he had left for work before the accident happened.
