VALENCIA — Police arrested two more suspected Islamic terrorists linked to the al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab Al Zarqawi.
The latest arrests follow an operation on Wednesday in which 16 suspects were arrested in raids across the country.
Eleven were said to be linked to Al Zarqawi, who is the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and behind Islamic terrorist attacks in the country.
The other five suspects are said to be linked to the Madrid train bombings in March last year in which 191 people were killed.
Police named one of the suspects arrested in Valencia, north-east Spain, as Algerian Faruk Abidi, 21, who was detained in an internment camp for foreigners in the city.
He is the brother of Khaled Abidi, also 21, who is said to be an important figure in the cell of Islamic terrorists.
Khaled is under arrested in connection with terrorism offences.
Faruk Abidi is said to have been willing to become a “martyr for the jihad” and helped raise cash for the terrorist cell in Spain. He has been transferred to Madrid.
Five hundred police were involved in the raids on Wednesday in Madrid, Catalonia, Levante and Ceuta, Spain’s north African enclave.
