Two killed as train slams truck in Spain

Two people were killed and eight injured in eastern Spain Monday when a passenger train hit a truck involved in the construction of a high-speed line between Madrid and Lisbon, a regional source said.

The driver of the dump truck and a woman passenger on the train were killed in the accident at Carmonita in the western region of Extremadura near the Portuguese border, the source in the Extremadura government said.

Eight passengers on the train were slightly injured in the accident, which occurred at about 12:30 pm.

The truck was involved in construction of a new high-speed rail service that is scheduled to link Madrid and Lisbon by the year 2013, cutting the journey time between the two capitals to less than three hours.
