Two ETA suspects arrested in France: Spain

13 February 2008

MADRID – Two suspected members of the armed Basque separatist organisation ETA were arrested Tuesday in southwestern France, Spain’s interior ministry said.

It identified the two as Eneko Pacual Marcilla and Garikoitz Pascual Muneta, but gave no further details on the circumstances of their arrest.

Spanish media said the two were sought under a European arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities.

Arrests of ETA members have multiplied since last June, when the group announced an end to a 15-month-old ceasefire.

ETA is blamed for the deaths of 819 people in Spain in a nearly 40-year campaign for an independent Basque state in northern Spain and parts of southwestern France.

In early December, the group claimed responsibility for the fatal shooting of two Spanish police officers in southwestern France who were working on a joint anti-ETA operation with French counterparts.
