GIJON – Two childern were taken into care Thursday after police found them tied to a bed and abandoned in a flat while their parents went begging.

The children, who are aged two and four, were tied to the bed by their ankles with a cord.

Their parents, who are from Romania, were not there when police raided their flat in the north-western city of Gijon.

The children have been taken to the Centro Materno Infantil hospital in nearby Oviedo.

Police raided the home after suspecting that the children had been abandoned.

Later, the parents of the children, named as Karofita D. Costel M., and aged 21 and 26, were arrested in the street as they begged with an eight-year-old child.

The parents, who are from Bucharest, told police they tied the children to the bed “for security” while they begged.

They claimed they did not want them to “escape or cause any problems”, police said.
