Turkish Nobel winner pays homage to novel

20 December 2007

MADRID – The Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk was awarded an honorary doctorate yesterday by Madrid’s Complutense University.

The winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize  for Literature dedicated the award to the novel itself, saying that it was "capable of creating an enormous human group, much better than any nation, civilisation or social collective."

The 55-year-old writer of Istanbul went on to say that the novel was "like a great musical orchestra, and is one of the greatest achievements of European civilisation."
