Torero hurt in Spanish bullfight

Spanish torero Julian Lopez “El Juli,” one of the best this season, was injured in the crotch after being gored during a bullfight in the San Fermin festival here Monday, websites reported.

El Juli suffered injuries to his testicles and underwent surgery on the ground, Mundotoro and Burladero said, without giving details about how serious they were.

In the absence of Jose Tomas, who had to break off his season after seriously injuring himself in Mexico in April, El Juli was seen as the most promising bullfighter during the festival.

Earlier Monday three Spanish nationals were injured during the sixth bull run of the festival in Pamplona, the capital city of northern Spain’s Navarra region.

All suffered bruises in falls while running through the narrow, twisting cobbled streets of the old town pursued by the bulls, a government statement said.

The run, which took just two minutes and 17 seconds, was described by organisers as “very fast.”

San Fermin, which was immortalized by Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises,” attracts tourists from all over the world. It ends on Wednesday.

On each day of the festival, six bulls are released to run from their corral over an 825-metre (yard) course to the bullring where they face matadors in the afternoon.

Fifteen people have been killed since 1911 in the bull run, which is broadcast live on Spanish television.

The festival also features concerts, street parties and dances.

A 37-year-old native of Pamplona was gored in the right thigh on Sunday while a 20-year-old British man was gored on Friday and needed surgery to his left thigh.

On Thursday a 43-year-old man from Ireland was gored through his left leg while a 21-year-old Spaniard was gored in the chest.
