Three arrested for kidnap of Canadian

6 July 2004

MADRID − Three men were arrested in Vigo in north-western Spain Tuesday in connection with the kidnapping of a Canadian woman.

The woman was kidnapped in Portugal on Sunday by the gang who allegedly demanded a EUR 500,000 (USD 614,000 ) ransom, Spanish police said Tuesday.

The men, a Spaniard of 41 and two Britons aged 27 and 29, were detained as they drove into Vigo, the home of the Spaniard, in a rented car.

The woman, identified only as Renee Lisa S., was snatched in the seaside resort of Estoril near the Portuguese capital Lisbon where she was on holiday with her husband.

She was freed without the payment of the ransom, which her husband was supposed to take to Vigo by bus.

One of the Britons detained was born in Vancouver on the west coast of Canada.
